Standard Wig Colors

One of the best things about wigs is the vast selection of colors that are available. You can match your own hair color or go for something new. Generally your eyebrow color is the standard to follow. For a natural look you will not want to stray too far from that.

Complexion is also a very important guide in selecting hair color. A strong contrast such as a pale complexion with jet-black hair, is great for making people notice your face, but only if you have a perfect complexion. Contrast is important, without it your face can get lost. Dark complexions and eye colors can still benefit from some contrast with hair color. Often a dark brown complexion will be set off with light chocolate hair, or jet-black hair. Then light brown complexions get contrast with dark brown hair. The amount of contrast is up to you.

There are color charts for the different manufacturers. Color #4 in Beverly Johnson may vary from Color #4 in Raquel Welch. Each company’s colors are different. About Chanta Patton

Chanta Patton is a versatile model who has over a decade of experience in the fashion and entertainment industry.

As a child, Chanta participated and placed top ten in statewide pageants in her hometown, Raleigh, N.C. She then moved to Baltimore, Maryland where she attended college on an academic scholarship, studying applied mathematics. During college, the ever-so-famous television show “America’s Next Top Model” came to Baltimore scouting for participants through a citywide model search. That day, Chanta skipped cheerleading practice and caught the subway to the model search. She walked away as Baltimore’s Next Top Model and a potential contestant for America’s Next Top Model. Although she never actually participated on the CW network show, she won this title twice in a row and became inspired to pursue modeling in a major market such as Los Angeles.

After graduating college on the Dean’s List with honors, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue modeling full time. Immediately, she began working. Appearing in a handful of music videos, such “Dangerous” by singer Akon ft. Kardinal and performing live on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards “Whatever you Like” with rapper T.I., Patton began to feel comfortable in front of the camera, learning first hand camera tricks and techniques. She began creating a buzz for herself when she graced the cover of King Magazine and Black Men’s Magazine (twice). Chanta has been featured in many national commercials for brand names such as Wendy’s and Nike/Footlocker and has been featured in countless print-ad campaigns. Today, her acting career takes precedence over her modeling career and she strives to be a powerful and memorable actress. In addition to acting/modeling, she tutors Los Angeles inner-city youth grades (K-8) in mathematics.

Can people tell I’m wearing a wig?
Raquel Welch wigs are virtually indistinguishable from a natural head of hair. Whether you choose a human hair or synthetic fiber wig, today’s state-of-the-art wig construction gives these wigs a realistic appearance. Today’s synthetic fibers are much thinner than they used to be, and thus avoid a bulky, wiggy look. Exclusive to Hair U Wear, Kanekalon Vibralite modacrylic fiber simulates protein rich hair for a natural, lustrous look and feel. The wide selection of colors reflect the multi-tonal shades that are requested in today’s better salons. In many ways, synthetic wigs are easier to handle than human hair because the style is baked into the fiber, keeping the shape intact day after day. However, many prefer human hair because the style is not baked in, and can be changed using thermal or other styling tools used on one’s own hair. Human hair wigs give you the option to style the hair straight one day and curly the next. Thermal styling tools are not recommended on synthetic fiber wigs.

Isn’t a wig uncomfortable?
In the 1960’s, wigs were made with solid caps that were definitely hot and sticky. In the 70s, the capless wig was invented. Capless wigs consist of lengths of fibers, called wefts that are sewn to cotton or lace stretch bands which shape to the head while allowing air to circulate the scalp. In the late 90s, the Raquel Welch Signature Collection introduced the patented Raquel Welch Memory Cap. This cap replaces the wide stretch lace used in most of today’s wigs with a thinner, more resilient stretch material that actually molds to the shape of the head for a lighter, more secure fit. All Raquel Welch wigs, except those that are 100% hand-tied, are made with the Raquel Welch Memory Cap construction.

What is my wig comes off?
A wig that fits your head is essential to security. A proper fit prevents slippage. Look for Velcro adjustments. Every Raquel Welch wig has Velcro adjustors on the back rim of the wig. These can be tightened or loosened for a proper fit. The stretch material in the Memory Cap also adds to a secure, comfortable fit. Ear tabs at the temples and extensions at the nape gently shape to the head, keeping the wig centered and secure. Raquel Welch wigs come in petite, petite average, average and large sizes.

What color should I choose?
Choose a color that is as close as possible to your natural color. If hair loss is a possibility in the future, save a swatch of your own hair for a match. You can always go a shade lighter than your own hair, but avoid going darker. The Raquel Welch Signature Collection has a wide range of salon-inspired colors, so you should be able to easily find the shade that is right for you.

What style should I choose?
Choose a style most similar to the one you usually wear, a style that suits your personality and life style. If you prefer to be adventurous, you may want to use this time to experiment with that new curly (or straight) look you always wanted. If you do change your style, stick close to your own color. An abrupt change in color and style might be too startling if done all at once. The Raquel Welch line has a multitude of looks (short, straight, long, curly, or wavy) in many varied styles (traditional, trendy, sporty, sophisticated, casual contemporary, business or pure glamour).

Aren’t wigs expensive?
The belief that all wigs are expensive is simply untrue. Wigs, like any piece of apparel, vary in price depending on the materials and craftsmanship. They can cost as little as $50 or more then $3000. Some insurance companies will allow you to claim your wig. Ask your doctor to write a prescription for a “hair prosthesis”, and ask your wig professional to state the same on the sales receipt. You may want to do this at tax time as well.

How to Measure for a Lace Wig

1. Circumference: This measures the perimeter of the head from the center hairline above the ears. The average measurement is 22" (56cm)"

2. Forehead to Nape of Neck: This measures the length of the head from the front hairline to the nape (back hairline). The average measurement is 14" (35.5cm)"

3\4 Wigs
A 3/4 wig--sometimes known as a French Comb hairpiece--has a cap which fits over the back of the head. They are available in both human hair and synthetic fiber, in many different lengths and styles. With a 3/4 wig, the front hair is worn out over the wig to create a very comfortable and natural-looking alternative to a full cap wig.

Alopecia Areata. is a common cause of hair loss. It often starts with one or more small round bald patches on the scalp and can progress to total body hair loss.

Average Wig Cap size
Wigs which are designed for a the average person with a head size of 21½ to 23½ inches. Most wigs on the market have this cap size and it works for most everyone. However your head size may be smaller, petite, ultra petite, children's or larger.

Banana Clip
A banana clip is a long, 2-part, plastic hair clip with teeth on the inner side of each part that grasp the hair and snap closed at the top. Many wig companies take these clips and attach hair to them in various lengths and styles. When a person's own hair is pinned or pulled back in a short ponytail and the banana clip hairpiece is snapped closed over it, it creates the illusion of a ponytail or bustle effect down the back of the head.

Baby Hair
Baby Hair is the fine hairs around the perimeter of a full lace wig. It gives a more natural appearance, as most people have shorter hair naturally at their hair line, and nape. Baby hairs are included in all Luxurious Hair Boutique in-stock Full Lace Units.

Bleached Knots
Bleached knots are a process of lightening the knots created when ventilating a lace unit. It is recommended to further provide the illusion of hair growing out of your scalp. Typically all of The Luxurious Hair Boutique stock units come with bleached knots, either at the perimeter or throughout.

Blending
To achieve the most realistic color graduations in a final wig, hairpiece, or extension, multi-colors of fiber are mixed together. This process is called "hackling" or "blending."

C3 Construction
Construction utilizing the 3 C's: Cool - lets your scalp breathe. Comfortable - constructed with new, softer and lighter materials. Capless - so lightweight you won't even know it's there.

Cap or Wig Cap
The base or skeleton that gives the wig it's shape and a base to attach hair to.

The underside cap portion of a wig upon which the wig hair fiber is sewn. There are variations on the types of cap styles, but basically 4 categories of caps are available: machine-made, hand-tied pre-designed, hair integration and full custom.

Capless Wigs
A capless wig is very similar to the standard cap design. However, it does not have the closed lace layer at the crown. It is open-wefted in the back, sides, and crown. This allows for maximum ventilation. It is also the lightest weight cap you can purchase.

Cranial Prosthesis
A "Cranial Hair Prosthesis" is medical insurance jargon (used on insurance forms) for a hair system for those suffering from hair loss due to medical conditions. It is essentially a high quality wig. Prostheses contain a combination of fabrics and compounds that are used to recreate natural hair growth patterns and the look of the scalp. All materials in the prosthesis are designed to provide maximum comfort.

Custom Wig
A custom wig is a wig is one where a manufacturer can use any combination of hair fiber, cap, styles, color to get you exactly what you want in a wig that is totally you.

Cuticle
The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair folicle. Hair has three layers: a cuticle (the outer layer), a cortex (the middle layer, composed primarily of keratin and moisture, plus melanin, which gives our hair its color), and a medulla (the center of the hair shaft).

Synthetic wigs are more natural looking than ever before. Synthetics can be shampooed and dried naturally with minimal care.

European hair
Very fine quality human hair which has been processed, ( processing removes the cuticle ). Therefore, it is strong and natural in appearance. Human hair wigs are very natural looking and the most comfortable. This is a good but expensive choice if you want a high quality human hair wig.

Full Lace Wig
Full lace wigs are wigs that extend a small portion of lace about 1-2 inches outward from the wig around the perimeter. It is constructed of lace material throughout the entire unit. Individual hairs are then expertly hand tied (ventilated) to the lace material used as a base for the cap construction. This hair system creates the illusion that hair is growing out of your scalp. When properly applied, full lace wigs achieves the most natural appearance available on the market today. It can be worn in a high pony tail and parted anywhere throughout the cap

Hair Fibers
Synthetic, human hair, or some combination of hair and synthetic fibers that are sewn or hand-knotted into a wig cap.

Hair Integration
The perfect solution for FINE AND THINNING HAIR. Hair integration is a system of nylon or polyester lines--kind of like a hairnet with hair attached--which allows you to pull your own hair out between the lines to create or add volume and/or length. Many of them are attached with small clip-combs which snap closed on your existing hair for security. They come in different sizes and different base constructions to accommodate various patterns of hair loss. A hair integration blends an individual's hair with an integration hair system to create fullness, volume and length. There are methods of attachment which would allow one to swim, play sports, and in general lead a very active life while wearing the integration system.

Your wig comes pre-styled and may be packaged inside out to eliminate coldest assuring a ready-in-an-instant style. Since everyone has a different face shape, forehead length, and different style preferences, we suggest having the wig initially customized by a professional hair stylist while you are wearing it. A little trim on the bangs and a little thinning here or there can make all the difference in the world. Remember, you should never brush, pick, comb or curl a wet wig unless you are resetting it entirely.

Step 1
Brush your wig gently using a wig brush or pick. Remember, using a brush designed for regular human hair will damage your wig.

Step 2
Put on your wig before you trim it. It is important to actually have your wig on to avoid mistakes while trimming and shaping. Remember, the hair won’t grow back if you make a mistake, so please take your time.

Step 3
Use thinning shears to remove some off the excess bulk out of your wig, it will lay better and look more natural. Put the thinning shears right up against the base of the wig before cutting so you won't leave stubble everywhere.

Step 4
Trim the bangs of the wig by pulling them down straight and cutting them like you would your real hair. Always cut wig hair a little longer than you want it so you can fix any mistakes.

Step 5
Cut the rest of the hair if you desire, just trim a little at a time as you would your own hair. Remember, if you rush, you could end up with an unwearable wig.

Step 6
Ensure that your new haircut is even by putting it on a wig stand and taking a close look. Trim any pieces you missed.

Step 1
Before washing your human hair wig, brush gently, or use a detangling comb from the tips of the wig to the base/roots. Never begin combing at the top or middle, this will damage and tangle the unit.

Step 2
Fill a basin with cold or cool water, add a dash of your favorite mild shampoo, Silicon Mix, Ionix, or Nearly Natural shampoo and swish gently. This will remove any sprayed on chemicals, buildup or residue. Do Not rub or twist hair!

Step 3
Rinse thoroughly then lightly squeeze hair in cold water making sure Not to rub the hair.

Step 4
Towel blot your wig gently in a patting motion, then place the unit on your wig stand to drip dry or wet set while it is still damp. You may use a spray bottle filled with diluted setting lotion or water to keep the hair moist as you work with the hair to style it. This will assist the hair to adhere to the rollers and give a good curl to the ends of the hair. If you prefer to use a flat iron or curling iron, let the unit air dry overnight or place the wig under a hard hat dryer on LOW, 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the length of the wig. Style the wig to your liking using gentle strokes with a comb or wig brush. Spray a light mist of hair spray or spritz to seal the curls, then style as desired.

Step 5
Remove the wig from the wig stand and try your freshly styled human hair wig on to see how it looks. You may need to add a few finishing touches to personalize the style of the wig to fit your face.

Step 6
Long hair products should be braided in a few sections for sleeping or swimming to prevent tangling of the hair.

Step 7
Don't sleep on wet hair. It will matt and tangle up.

* Shampoo and condition your own hair at least once a week if you wear a regular wig or every two weeks if you wear a full lace wig or hair prosthesis.

Face shape is the single-most important consideration in determining hairstyle, haircut or wig style.

If you use your face shape as a guide, you can determine which styles are more likely to compliment your facial features. Your style selection should accentuate your best facial features and minimize the less-flattering ones. Be realistic in your style selection. The best styles should frame the face and give balance to your overall appearance. The goal should be to draw attention to the face and have your best features standout.

In addition to the shape of your face, there are other issues facts to consider. You should also consider the size of your face and head, the length of your neck, and the shape of your body.

There are lots of suggestions on how to figure out your face shape, from outlining the face on a mirror with lipstick to draping it with a towel and asking others to help you guess the shape. Though far from exact, there is a more scientific way of determining the structure of your face.

~ Oval - many choices

As its name implies, the oval-shaped face is longer than wide, with a jaw that is narrower than the cheekbones. Because the oval shaped face has no dominant areas and is so proportional, this face looks good with just about any hairstyle, length or texture.

~ Round - Avoid Width

The round-shaped face has a wide hairline and fullness below the cheekbones. The client may be overweight and the neck may appear short. A geometric or linear style looks very good. Add height and long wispy sides to make the cheeks look narrow. Sides and nape comb close.

Try
Style with fullness and height at the crown. Off center parts. Short hair styles with a swept-back direction or hair styles that are longer than chin length. By layering the top to achieve fullness and keeping the rest of the cut relatively close to the face, your face shape will appear longer and narrower.

Avoid
Chin length hair with a rounded line that mirrors face's circular shape. Center parts. Short-short crops, straight "chopped" bangs. Fullness at side of ears. A rounded haircut ending at the chin will certainly add weight to your face shape. Because the widest part of your face is at the cheeks and ears, you need to avoid having the fullness of the cut here as it will make your face appear wider.

~ Diamond - Reduce width at sides

The diamond-shaped face has a narrow chin and forehead with wide cheekbones. Diamond shaped faces need narrow sides and fullness at the chin. Bobs work very well. Avoid height on top or volume on the sides. Use some fringe or bangs to cover narrow forehead.

~ Heart - Add volume at chin

The heart-shaped face is characterized by a wider forehead and a narrower chin. Bring some hair onto the forehead to disguise its width. Keep hair close to the head at the eyes but make it slightly full around the jaw, and below and in front of the earlobes.

Try
Chin-length or longer styles. Side-parted hair styles. Swept-forward layers around the upper face, gently wispy bangs. A chin length bob is great on your face shape! This creates a balanced look by giving fullness where you need it. You can wear shorter styles, however, if you are a dramatic heart shape you need to leave weight in the back nape area. This will achieve more balance between your dramatic cheekbones and more narrowing chin.

Avoid
Short, full styles that emphasize upper face. Height at the crown. Severe, slicked back looks. If you are a dramatic heart shape, the short full styles with tapered necklines which emphasize the upper face will make you look top heavy. Too much height at the crown will give the appearance of a longer and narrower chin. Just remember if you have a dramatic heart shape face, you have great cheekbones to emphasize! ~ Pear - Add volume above jaw line

The pear-shaped face is characterized by a small or narrow forehead and a rather large pouchy-appearing jaw line. Comb hair to add width from the eye level through the crown of the head. Set and comb hair close to the head on the sites and at the nape.

~ Oblong - Add Softness

The oblong-shaped face has a long and narrow bone structure. An oblong facial shape often has a long, thin neck. Use a fringe or half-bang across the forehead by creating the soft waves or curls in the crown or nape areas. This helps to create the illusion of an oval.

By cutting the hair into a short or medium length, the outline of the cut will also shorten the look of the length of the face. Layers work great with your face shape, as they will add softness to the straight lines in your face. Try side parts, and you may be able to wear straight back styles.

Avoid
To much hair length . . . your face will look even longer! Too much height lengthens your face. Center parts. When your hair gets past your shoulders there is a good chance it is doing you more harm than good. Try to keep it above shoulder length.

The first step to successfully cornrow your hair is planning. You will need to decide on two things before you being
1) which direction are you going to cornrow in?
2) what type of design do you have in mind?

After you have decided which direction you are going to cornrow in and if you are going to accomplish any designs, you must section out the hair. When you section out the hair, it should include the guideline. The guideline will help you if the style you are choosing requires the hair to divide into many sections. It will also show you where your first cornrow should begin.

Once you have sectioned out the hair and found your guideline. Take three small amount of hair from the point where you want the cornrow to start to braid two stitches.

Then pick up a small amount of hear nearby, from the section and add it to the middle strand. This is usually the one that will be next to be pulled outwards. Then take one of the strands that lie on the outside and place is underneath the newly thickened strand.

Finally, braid one stitch and the pick up some more hair, braid one and pick up more and so on. This is not an exact science, but it should help you to understand the process.

	Separate front 1"to 2" of hair by parting from ear to ear.
	Hold the wig near the front comb and place on the head.
	Insert the front comb section of wig into the front part area.
	Pull the wig down and secure the back comb into your hair. Then, blend and style your front hair to match the wig.

First, take your new wig out of its packaging and gently shake out the hair Make sure you identify which is the front and which is the back. The back is always where the tag is.

Then brush your hair back and pin away any strays you may find. If you wish, you can also use a wig cap liner to help keep your hair in place.

Hold the wig as seen in diagram A, then slip the wig onto your head as seen in diagram B. You will feel ear tabs on either side of the wig. Make sure those are even with your ears.

Once placed on your head, the wig should fit securely and comfortably. If you want extra protection, you can bobby pin the wig cap to your own hair or to the wig cap liner.

Finally, tuck in any stray hairs and style as you would your natural hair.

Place the pocket over your bun, inserting the two combs into the bun.

Pull the elastic draw-string around your natural bun until it is secure around your bun.

Tie off the elastic draw-string.

Perhaps you have seen movies that portray people wearing wigs in the 1600s and 1700s. You know, the men in it are wearing long, curly, white wigs. It seems the whiter the wig; the more important you were in those days.

While you may think wigs came about around this time, you would be wrong. As a matter of fact, the first known wigs were worn by Egyptians hundreds of years earlier as a protection to keep the sun from burning their shaved heads. Other ancient peoples, including the Assyrians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans also used wigs.

Depending on the era, wigs were also frequently worn as a sign of wealth or were linked with a particular profession. During times of war, wigs even were used to intimidate the enemy.

Under the reign of French King, Louis XIII, who lost his hair as a young man, the "Along" wig for men became a vital part of every garment. The more exquisite wigs came from the French, whose customs were popular among the fashion world. In the decades that followed, the more grand the era, the more eccentric the wigs looked. Eventually, with the outbreak of the French Revolution both fashion and wigs lost importance. It was not until after 1820 that wigs became popular again.

Today wigs and hairpieces are no longer used as a status symbol. They are worn by many on a daily or occasional basis as a matter of convenience as they can be styled ahead of time and then worn when there is not sufficient time to style one’s hair. They are also worn by individuals who are experiencing hair loss due to medical reasons (most commonly cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or those who are suffering from alopecia areata). In men, the most common cause of baldness is “male-pattern baldness” and this is probably the most common reason for wig-wearing in this group.
